James Leander Hardin was born in Oldham County, Kentucky, on April 16, 1838, the son of Warner Hardin and Catherine Ann Hitt. A lawyer, Hardin was six feet tall, with a light complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. Corporal Hardin was discharged in the field on September 12, 1862, to accept promotion as first lieutenant of the Third Kentucky Infantry. He married Vinette Gregg and they had five children: Edmund Burke Hardin (1873-1939), Annie Elvira Hardin (1876-?), Minnie Hardin Lyle (1877-1936), Mary Allensworth Hardin Beard (1879-1950) and James Bruce Hardin (1881-1956). Hardin was hit by a train and killed on September 9, 1881, near Long Run in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
