Remembering First Lieutenant Coleman Spencer Daniel

Coleman Daniel was born in Louisville on May 27, 1842, the son of William Augustus Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Cooper. A farmer, he was 5’9”, with a light complexion, hazel eyes and light hair. Daniel was a farmer. Daniel was wounded at the Battle of Perryville, October 8, 1862. He was promoted to first lieutenant on October 9, 1863, following the death of Lieutenant McGrath. Daniel’s promotion was controversial, and he resigned as a result on February 20, 1864. Daniel married Ellen Wright on May 20, 1864, in Vevay, Indiana. He died on June 8, 1898 in Louisville. They had a son, William Albert (1865-1939) and two daughters, Elizabeth W., who was born in 1875, and Rebecca Lowry (1886-1964).
