Remembering Private Henry Bremer, Company A of the Fifteenth Kentucky


Private Franz Heinrich Bremer was born January 1, 1835 in Dassow, Nordwestmecklenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, the son of Georg Heinrich Bremer and Maria Anna Rose. Bremer was 5’7 ½”, with a light complexion, gray eyes and light hair. Bremer was a stonecutter before the war. Henry Bremer was promoted to corporal on December 24, 1862 but was reduced to the ranks again for his unexplained absence during the Battle of Stones River on January 12, 1863. Bremer was arrested and charged with forgery in November 1863 but was released by orders of division headquarters in July 1864. He married Wilhelmina Christina Schleuter and had four daughters, Marie (1864- ), Antonia Bremer Hupf (1870-1954), Elizabeth Jane (1876-1965), Wilhelmina Bremer Lange (1876-1958), and nine sons, Conrad Anton (1865-1961), William Franz Friedrich (1870-1970), Friedrich Wilhelm (1871-1940), Louis Charles (1873-1962), Henry William (1875-1952), Joseph John (1878-1953), Albert Henry (1882-1968), Henry J. (1883-1949), and Francis August Bremer (1886-1960).
