Thomas W. Gardner was born in Middlesex County, Virginia around 1835, the son of James and Jannette D. Gardner. He was a bricklayer when he enlisted. Gardner was 5’9 ¼” with a dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. Private Gardner was discharged on January 5, 1862, at Louisville on a certificate of disability based on bronchitis. He married Jane Kathen Sebree on August 19, 1858 in Lancaster County, Virginia. Although his date of death has not been discovered, he was living in Marion, Indiana as late as 1895.
