Gus Mullen was born in 1842 in Shelby County, Kentucky and was the son of Augustus Mullen Sr. and Malvenia Adelaide Russell. Mullen was 5’9”, with a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. Private Mullen was wounded at the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862, and again near Dallas, Georgia, on May 29, 1864. He married Frances Lavinia Taylor on September 12, 1868 in Crittenden County, Kentucky. They had two sons: James William (1874-1959) and David Franklin (1874-1932) and four daughters: Frances Melvina Mullen McDowell (1869-1947), Mary Augusta Mullen DeHaven (1872-1914), Susan Emily Mullen McDowell (1876-1939) and Minnie Alice Mullen Tabor (1878- ).
