Remembering First Lieutenant Joseph William Lyle

Joseph William Lyle was born in Shelby County in 1843, the son of John Newton Lyle and Mary Malvina Allen and the younger brother of First Lieutenant Henry Martin Lyle. A farmer, he was 5’7”, with a light complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. Lieutenant Lyle was promoted to corporal on December 24, 1862. He was promoted to sergeant on January 16, 1863, and to first lieutenant on March 20, 1864. Lyle was acting sergeant major for the regiment from July 1863 through February 1864. Lieutenant Lyle was slightly wounded at the Battle of Resaca on May 14, 1864. Lyle married Emma V. Armstrong in Shelby County on November 5, 1867. He died about 4:00 a.m. February 3, 1887 at the Armstrong Hotel in Shelbyville and is buried in Grove Hill Cemetery.
