Anselm Benjamin McAhan was born in Bardstown, Kentucky on April 21, 1844, the son of Felix McAhan and Rosella Aud. He was 5’6 ½”, with a dark complexion, gray eyes and light hair. McAhan was on detached service with the Pioneers from August 31, 1862 through September 1, 1864. He married Anna Hogan in Jacksonville, Illinois on December 24, 1872. They had four daughters: Louise Gorham (1874-1960), Harriet McAhan McGregor (1877-1965), Edith McAhan Garvey (1886- ) and Marguerite Leila McAhan Hager (1890-1941) and one son, Charles (1878-1965). He died at the National Military Home in Kansas on September 19, 1920.
