Remembering Private Henry Clay Daniel, Company A of the Fifteenth Kentucky


Henry Clay Daniel was born in Cadiz, Kentucky on July 16, 1842. He was the son of Andrew Broaddus Daniel and Matilda Greenwade. Daniel was 5’9 ½” and had a light complexion, brown eyes and dark hair. He listed his profession as landlord on his muster-in documents. Private Daniel deserted March 7, 1863 in Louisville, Kentucky. He surrendered to authorities on September 22, 1865. He married Mary Elizabeth Gillenwaters Brown (1847-1941) in Cass County, Missouri on November 11, 1868. They had four sons, Charles Hardin (1872-1915), Robert Brown (1873-1955), Henry Clay II (1877-1952), and William Gillenwaters (1882-1911) and four daughters, Pearl Hall Daniel Merrill (1869-1953), Mame Brown Daniel Moore (1876-1957), Elizabeth Gillenwaters Daniel Barnes (1879-1957) and Louise Merrill Daniel Crawford (1888-1969).
