Massina Willard Fontaine was born in Louisville on August 17, 1839, the son of Massina Fontaine Sr. and Malitta Pomeroy. He was a jeweler when the war began. Fontaine was 5’3 ½” with a dark complexion, gray eyes and light hair. He married Mary Jane Willard in Marion County, Kentucky on July 17, 1867. They had two sons: Massina Willard Fontaine Jr. (1869-1949) and Thomas Pomeroy Fontaine (1872-1948) and two daughters: Mary Emma Fontaine Conover (1872-1952) and Adelia Malitta Fontaine (1878-1887).
