Samuel Rule was born in 1828 in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the son of Samuel Rule and Elizabeth Cline. Rule was 5’6”, with a dark complexion, black eyes and black hair. Rule was recruited by Capt. Marion Taylor in Louisville on September 12, 1862. Private Rule was discharged February 3, 1864 in Louisville on a certificate of disability based upon heart disease. Rule married Sarah Fairfax in Louisville on June 8, 1852. They had three sons, Robert (1859- ), Samuel Estle (1866-1939) and Charles Thomas (1868-1961), and three daughters, Elizabeth Rule Randolph (1855-1900), Susan O. Rule Yonts (1858=1925) and Alice Ednora Rule Ham (1862-1935). Rule died on July 4, 1892 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
