Private Stephen Addison Kinkead was born on October 19, 1843 in Shelby County, the son of Allen Kinkead and Sarah Ellis. A farmer when he enlisted. Kinkead was 5’8”, with a light complexion, dark eyes and brown hair. Private Kinkead was wounded at the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862, and was discharged on January 9, 1863 in Louisville on a certificate of disability. The surgeon reported that Kinkead’s wound had caused permanent stiffening in his left wrist and fingers. Kinkead married Sarah Gordon Churchill in Shelby County on January 6, 1869. They had twins born only a few weeks after Stephen’s death: John Allen (1871-1924) and Sarah Stevie Kinkead Hampton, 1871-1950, whose middle name was apparently “Stephen.” Private Kinkead died on June 24, 1871 in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
