Stephen Cosgrove was born in Augusta County, Virginia and was a teamster before the war. Cosgrove was thirty-six years old when he enlisted; he was 5’9 ¾” and had a fair complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair. In January 1863, Cosgrove was assigned as an ambulance driver. Private Cosgrove was discharged on April 20, 1863, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on a certificate of disability based on a rib injury and chronic rheumatism. An entry for Stephen Cosgrove living at the Pacific Branch of the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers near Los Angeles in 1888 appears to refer to Private Cosgrove.
