Remembering Second Lieutenant Joseph L. Atherton

Joseph L. Atherton was born on April 2, 1838 in Shelby County. He was 5’11”, with a dark complexion, dark eyes and black hair. Atherton was promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1862 and to second lieutenant on March 16, 1863. Atherton served as brigade ordnance officer from June 8, 1863 to October 14, 1863. On January 26, 1864, he was named captain of Company H of the Fifteenth Kentucky. Atherton married Maria E. Brown in Floyd County, Indiana in on November 5, 1868. They had two sons: George F. (1870-1894) and Lawrence (1882-1883).
